Thinking About Booking a Sandals Resort During Hurricane Season? Read This First
If you've been dreaming about a Sandals vacation, honeymoon, or destination wedding but noticed your travel dates fall during hurricane season, you're not alone. One of the most common questions I receive is:
"Should we still book?"
The short answer? Usually yes, but with a plan.
As a Gold Certified Sandals Specialist who has visited every Sandals resort multiple times and helped plan countless Sandals vacations and honeymoons, I help clients navigate this decision every day. Hurricane season doesn't automatically mean you should postpone your dream vacation or honeymoon. It simply means choosing the right destination, traveling at the right time, understanding the risks, and planning wisely.
When Is Hurricane Season?
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30, with activity typically peaking between late August and early October.
That may sound concerning, but here's what many travelers don't realize:
• Hurricane season does not mean it rains every day.
• Most Caribbean vacations during hurricane season happen without any significant weather issues.
• Modern forecasting allows storms to be tracked several days in advance, giving travelers time to make informed decisions.
• Even during hurricane season, it's common to enjoy beautiful sunny mornings with a brief afternoon shower before the sunshine returns.
Not Every Sandals Resort Has the Same Hurricane Risk
One of the biggest misconceptions is that every Caribbean island experiences the same weather. They don't.
While no Caribbean destination is completely immune to tropical weather, some islands have historically experienced far fewer direct hurricane impacts than others. Here's how I generally guide my clients when planning a Sandals vacation or honeymoon during hurricane season.
Lowest Overall Risk
If avoiding hurricane concerns is your top priority, this is almost always my first recommendation depending on the timeframe.
Curaçao sits outside the primary Atlantic hurricane belt and has an exceptional weather history. In fact, the last direct hurricane landfall on Curaçao was in 1877. While no destination is completely immune to tropical weather, direct hurricane impacts here are extremely rare, making it one of the best choices for travelers looking for added peace of mind during hurricane season.
Lower Risk
These destinations are still within the Caribbean and can experience tropical weather or the occasional storm, but historically they have seen fewer direct hurricane impacts than many islands farther north.

Higher Exposure
Jamaica and The Bahamas
Jamaica and the Bahamas are located in areas that can experience greater exposure to Atlantic tropical systems, particularly during the peak of hurricane season from late August through early October.
That doesn't mean you should avoid these destinations—in fact, I travel to and book them regularly—but I do encourage clients to be thoughtful about their travel dates, purchase comprehensive travel insurance, and have a contingency plan in place.

Don't Skip Travel Insurance
If there's one piece of advice I give every client traveling during hurricane season, it's this: Don't skip travel insurance.
Travel insurance can help protect your investment if weather affects your trip. Coverage varies by policy, so it's important to understand exactly what is and isn't included before you travel.

Should You Cancel If a Hurricane Is Forecast?
Not necessarily.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that a hurricane somewhere in the Caribbean means your vacation is ruined.
In reality, hurricanes are monitored days before they arrive, and resorts, airlines, and local authorities take these systems very seriously. A storm affecting one island may have little to no impact on another destination just a few hundred miles away.
Rather than relying on social media headlines, I help my clients evaluate the forecast, understand their options, and make informed decisions based on the latest information.
