Have you ever found yourself in the Los Angeles area with just one day available for a little family fun? Maybe you’d really love to visit Disneyland, but you’re wondering if it’s even possible to experience the magic with only a single day.

I’m here to tell you: Yes, you can absolutely do Disneyland in one day!

The key is having the right expectations and a well-thought-out plan.

For the past two years, I’ve found myself in the Los Angeles area for scheduled events, with an extra day that my family simply wanted to spend having fun. While I knew that a single day at Universal Studios Hollywood could be a great and very doable option—with the right planning, of course—I also knew that some of my family members hadn’t been to Disneyland in several years. They really wanted to return and see what had changed in the parks.

So, I put my Disneyland planning expertise to work!

A one-day Disneyland visit is not for the faint of heart, and it certainly isn’t my recommendation for everyone. There is simply so much to see, do, eat and experience that even several days can leave you wanting more. But if one day is what you have, you can absolutely make it a memorable one.

Here’s how I recommend approaching it.

1. Set Realistic Expectations

The first—and perhaps most important—step is to be realistic about what you can accomplish.

You are not going to experience everything Disneyland Resort has to offer in one day.

Depending on the time of year, day of the week, park hours and crowd levels, you may accomplish more or less than another family visiting on a different day.

And that’s okay!

Instead of trying to do everything, focus on what matters most to your family.

2. Choose Your Top 3–5 Must-Do Experiences

Before you ever walk through the park gates, sit down with your family and decide on your top three to five priorities.

These might include:

  • A favorite attraction
  • A brand-new attraction you’ve never experienced
  • A character meet-and-greet
  • A parade or nighttime spectacular
  • A particular land you want to explore
  • A favorite Disneyland snack or meal

Think of these as your “must experience” list.

If you accomplish those things, your day is a success. Everything else is icing on the cake!

For families with younger children, I recommend choosing around three top priorities. If you have teens or adults who are ready to go from rope drop until the park closes, you might choose five.

You can also create a secondary list of attractions you’d love to experience if time allows. Just remember: the goal isn’t to check every box. It’s to enjoy the day.

3. Decide Whether You Need Park Hopper

Once you have your priority list, take a look at where those experiences are located.

You may discover that your must-do attractions are split between Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park.

If that’s the case, a Park Hopper ticket can be incredibly valuable for a one-day visit.

I know some families hesitate to purchase Park Hopper for just one day, but there is one major advantage at Disneyland Resort: the two parks are incredibly close together. You can walk from one park entrance to the other in just a few minutes.

That flexibility can make a huge difference when you’re trying to maximize a single day.

This is also where your Me and the Mouse Travel Specialist can really help. Share your must-do list with your agent, and they can help determine which park makes the most sense to start your day in based on your priorities, park hours and the schedule for your specific visit.

4. Decide If a Nighttime Spectacular Is a Priority

Are you dreaming of ending your day with a parade, fireworks or another nighttime spectacular?

If so, plan for it before you arrive.

Some Disneyland entertainment offerings have dining packages that can provide access to preferred viewing areas. Depending on your family's priorities, these can be a great way to combine a meal with your nighttime entertainment plans.

Personally, I love a dining package that includes a quick-service meal. It allows me to grab something to eat without spending a large portion of my limited park time at a sit-down restaurant, while also giving me a great viewing location for the nighttime entertainment.

Your travel specialist can help you determine whether a dining package makes sense for your particular day—or whether your time would be better spent enjoying attractions and finding a viewing location on your own.

5. Keep Meals Quick

Speaking of dining, a one-day Disneyland visit is not necessarily the day for leisurely meals.

Quick-service dining can help you maximize your time in the parks while still giving everyone a chance to refuel.

That doesn’t mean you have to skip character dining altogether!

If a character meal is important to your family, consider scheduling it the night before or the morning after your park day. Depending on your plans, options such as Goofy’s Kitchen, Storytellers Cafe or Disney Princess Breakfast Adventures can allow you to enjoy a memorable character meal without taking valuable time away from your one park day.

6. Choose Your Hotel Carefully

Where you stay can make a big difference when you only have one day in the parks.

For maximum convenience, consider one of the three Disneyland Resort hotels:

  • Disneyland Hotel
  • Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa
  • Pixar Place Hotel

Staying at a Disneyland Resort hotel puts you close to the magic and can make getting to and from the parks much easier. Depending on your room and location, you may even be able to enjoy views of nighttime entertainment.

Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa also offers its own entrance into Disney California Adventure Park, providing an especially convenient option for guests staying there.

There are also many excellent Good Neighbor Hotels located within walking distance of Disneyland Resort. Your Me and the Mouse Travel Specialist can help you compare the options and find the best fit for your family and budget.

No matter where you stay, one thing is especially important for a one-day visit:

Get to the parks early.

Being there before opening gives you the opportunity to experience some of the attractions with the longest wait times before the crowds build throughout the day.

7. Consider Lightning Lane

Another tool that can be particularly valuable when you only have one day is Lightning Lane.

Disneyland offers Lightning Lane options that can help you spend less time waiting in standby queues and more time experiencing attractions.

With Lightning Lane Multi Pass, you can make eligible Lightning Lane selections and, after using a selection, choose another attraction when availability allows. This can be a great way to strategically work through your priority list throughout the day.

There are also individual Lightning Lane options available for select attractions at an additional cost.

And for families who really want to maximize their day and have the budget available, Lightning Lane Premier Pass offers one-time Lightning Lane access to each eligible attraction without having to accommodate return windows.

Because Lightning Lane availability, pricing and eligible attractions can change, this is another area where having a knowledgeable travel specialist can be extremely helpful. Your agent can help you understand the current options and determine which, if any, make sense for your one-day visit.

8. Don’t Forget the Photos!

When you're racing around Disneyland trying to fit as much as possible into one day, don't forget to stop and take pictures!

Your vacation is about more than checking attractions off a list. You’re creating memories that you’ll want to look back on for years to come.

Depending on the Lightning Lane option you purchase, Disney PhotoPass benefits may be included, allowing you to take advantage of photos captured by Disney PhotoPass photographers and select attractions.

Be sure to follow the current instructions in the Disneyland app for linking attraction photos and accessing your PhotoPass images, and pay attention to the applicable download and expiration policies.

After all, pictures are worth a thousand words—and you'll want to remember the smiles, excitement and magic from your whirlwind Disneyland day!

So, Can You Really Do Disneyland in One Day?

Absolutely!

Is one day enough to see and do everything?

Definitely not.

But is one day enough to experience some of your family's favorite attractions, enjoy the atmosphere, make magical memories and leave already planning your next visit?

Absolutely.

In fact, that may be the biggest problem with a one-day Disneyland visit.

Once you've experienced even a small taste of everything Disneyland Resort has to offer, you may find yourself wanting more!

And that’s where we come in.
