REAL ID: Are You Ready for Your Next Adventure?
- ✅ Domestic flights: REAL ID license/ID or valid passport.
- ✅ International flights: Passport required; REAL ID won’t get you on an international flight.
- ✅ Kids under 18: No ID needed with an adult (domestic).
REAL ID in effect since May 7, 2025.
As of May 7, 2025, travelers 18+ must have a REAL ID–compliant license/ID or another acceptable ID (like a U.S. Passport) to board domestic flights in the U.S.

What is REAL ID?
REAL ID is a set of federal security standards for state driver’s licenses and ID cards. It’s still your state license/ID—it just meets federal rules for flying and going to certain secure federal facilities. REAL ID cards usually have a star on the front.
Do I need a REAL ID to fly?
Adults 18+ need either: (a) a REAL ID–compliant license/ID, or (b) another accepted ID like a valid U.S. passport, passport card, a DHS Trusted Traveler card (e.g., Global Entry), or an enhanced driver’s license where available. If you already fly with your passport, you can keep doing that.
See the full TSA identification checklist here.
When does the REAL ID requirement start?
May 7, 2025. That’s the first day TSA will require a REAL ID–compliant license/ID or another acceptable ID for domestic flights.
How do I know if my license is REAL ID–compliant?
Look for the star marking on the front (placement varies by state). No star? It likely isn’t REAL ID–compliant. Check your REAL ID here.
What documents do I need to get a REAL ID?
- Proof of identity and date of birth (valid passport or certified birth certificate)
- Social Security number (card, W-2, or SSA letter, depending on state)
- Two proofs of residency (utility bill, bank statement, lease, etc.)
- If your name changed: legal name-change document (marriage certificate, court order, etc.)
Use your state’s official DMV/Secretary of State site for the exact checklist.
Where do I apply for my REAL ID?
Your state DMV or license office. Start with this map and click your state.
How long will it take to get my REAL ID?
Processing times vary by state and office. If you have a trip on the calendar, apply early. (2–3 weeks but note that states have various rules.)
Do children need a REAL ID to fly?
No. Children under 18 don’t need ID for domestic flights when they travel with an adult. Airlines may have their own policies, so check your carrier if needed.
Does a REAL ID work for international trips?
No. You still need your valid passport for international travel. For domestic flights, you only need one acceptable ID—a REAL ID or another valid alternative like a passport, not both.
Note: a passport card and enhanced driver’s license work for certain land and sea crossings (e.g., Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean) but not for international air travel.
What if I show up without a REAL ID or acceptable ID?
TSA may attempt to verify your identity with questions. If they can verify it, you can proceed with additional screening. If they can’t, you won’t be allowed through the checkpoint. Learn more about the TSA identification screening process.
