Exclusive to Disney Cruise Line guests, the Castaway Cay 5K is a free runDisney fun run available on most Disney cruises visiting Castaway Cay. If you are a runner or walker this is a spectacular challenge to be a part of!

Registration is located at the Port Adventures desk on board your ship. While the minimum age to officially run is 10 years old, if you have a child under that age that is a runner, know that the course is open to all island visitors so young runners can participate although they will not have a bib number nor receive a medal at the end. My family members under age 10 loved the course although it’s important you have your children supervised at all times during the race. For those officially registered at the Port Adventures desk, you will receive a release form that you'll bring the morning of the race to get your bib number.

Next, it’s time to get some sleep because race morning is coming! Head to the adult club area of the ship for your bib number and race instructions. Also, don’t forget your release, room key, and driver's license (for adults) or you’ll end up running back to your room for whichever item you forgot!

After disembarking the ship as a group, you’ll walk to the beginning of the 5K course. It takes about 15 minutes to get to the start of the race, but it is a good warm up to stretch your legs. The walk goes by Scuttle’s Cove where many parents drop off their children to be supervised by the friendly Disney children’s programming staff. Disney also has a place for people to store their items while they run if you choose not to head back to the ship right after the race.

Adrenaline builds up when you see the 5K start sign and before you know it, you are off!  The start of the race heads down a short path towards the airplane landing strip. Part way down the strip, you head off onto a lush looped path that takes you by the island’s observation tower. Along the path, water is available on humid days and welcome for all. At the end of the loop, finish running the rest of the landing strip, and then retrace your steps back to the start.

The Disney cruise staff cheers you all along the way and is a huge encouragement to keep on going. At the end are the coveted Castaway Cay medal and no guilt when you eat your dessert at that night’s meal! For those runners that treasure their race t-shirts, go ahead and treat yourselves to a Castaway Cay 5K t-shirt located at merchandise store beside the start/finish line.

If you are interested in a fun and positive running environment I’d recommend running the Castaway Cay 5K. You will not regret the accomplishment you make on your already amazing Disney Cruise Line vacation!
