So this blog almost didn’t happen…twice. “Why?” you may ask… because the food is so good I destroyed it before I got pictures. True story. If you’ve read my blogs before, you know I like food, and burgers are my thing, so when we discovered Cowfish in Universal’s Citywalk, a mere 90 minutes away from us, I was elated because we literally travel across the country for food.

Cowfish is the perfect nightcap after a long day running around Universal’s theme parks and is conveniently located a short walk from each park on your way out of the Citywalk complex. It’s a three-story restaurant with some cool views if you are seated on the patio or third-story deck. It boasts some underwater theming and even a trio of interactive screens on the way in to occupy your time while you wait. Because it’s so popular, there is almost always a wait, but a little insider’s tip- hit up the hostess stand to sit at the bar to eat dinner and you can usually get right in.

Cowfish is a very unique concept in that it specializes in creative pairings from start to finish, highlighting both sea-faring options and burgers. The appetizers are no exception and range from Crab Rangoon Dip to Blackened Tuna Nachos to Crinkle Cut Fried Pickles.

In my opinion, the gourmet burgers are the star of the show, and McDonald’s it is not. So, while prices might be on the higher side for a burger, between $15-$17, it is worth the extra dough. And if you have an annual pass, remember to show your server for a discount!

One of my favorite burgers is the Boursin Bacon Burger. It’s proven very difficult for me to get something other than this because, well, Boursin and bacon. I usually sub out the bacon for their oh-so-amazing smoked candied bacon. If you are up for experimenting with your food a little, there are lots of crazy combos to try. For example, have you ever tried blackberries, thyme-infused honey, and sake marinated Asian pear on a burger with Brie? If not, you should!

Another awesome option is the Hoisin Burger which has a beef burger, hoisin cooked short ribs, smoked candied bacon, pickled red onions, and English cucumbers on a brioche bun. If you are more adventurous, and I suppose ravenous, then there is a full-pound burger crowned with peanut butter and fried bananas.

If burgers aren’t your thing, the sushi doesn’t disappoint, which works out really well for my husband and me because he could do sushi seven days a week.  They of course have your classic rolls, but then they also have a variety of specialty rolls as well. If you can’t decide between meat or sushi. Try the High-Class Hillbilly- Southern Style Bar-B-Q-Shi which is pulled pork, caramelized onion, and BBQ sauce, potato wrapped and flash-fried. It's topped with house-made bacon coleslaw and chives. Or beyond that, they have the best of both worlds with their bento boxes that feature both a burger and a sushi roll, but in smaller portions.

Last but not least, Cowfish also offers hand-spun milkshakes with options like the P “Double B” and J Shake which is Vanilla ice cream, peanut butter, banana, and jelly, or the Yuzu Lemonade. That one features vanilla ice cream, fresh-squeezed lemon juice, yuzu juice, and thyme-infused honey. Really, with 13 varieties to choose from, you can’t go wrong.
